Picasso was born in Málaga, Spain on October 25, 1881. He baptized with the name: Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Crispiniano de la Santísima Trinidad - a combination of names of saints and the relatives of his family, given to him in order to honor them. To the end of his name, “Ruiz y Picasso” (his parent’s last names) was added, as to follow Spanish Tradition. He was the first child of Don José Ruiz y Blasco and María Picasso y López. His first words were "piz, piz." an abbreviation of the Spanish word for pencil: lápiz.
Picasso showed talent at a young age. He produced this drawing at the age of twelve. By the time he was 13, his father - who was an artist and professor - felt that his son had surpassed him, and therefore resigned from his career. As he got older, Picasso became known prominantly as a painter - though he worked with many other means of creating art as well (ex. Sculpture). He went through different, very distinct stages in his art, starting with what is known as his "Early Period." The years that would follow would be named his "Blue Period," "Rose Period," "African Influenced Period," "Cubist and Surrealist Period," and a last uncategotized era named only "Later Works."
Pablo Picasso died on April 8, 1793, at the age of 91. Only after had died was it recognized that he was responsible for the 'discovery' of neo-expressionism, and was given credit for it. As he had been all his life, Picasso was then ahead of the rest of the art world. He had established himself among the greatest, most famous artists in the world.
His last words were, "Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can't drink any more." He was burried in Castle Vauvenargues' park, in Vauvenargues, Bouches-du-Rhone, in the Southern part of France.
